In the younger classes games are always introduced with a story or
creative situation so that the physical activity has an imaginative
focus.
This enhances the children’s enjoyment of, and involvement
in, the game and helps to keep at bay the everincreasing pressures on
young children to be ‘sporty’.
A change occurs around Class
Five with the introduction of the Olympic events such as running,
jumping, discus and javelin. Ball games and variations on games like
rounders are introduced, often retaining an imaginative element but
not, as yet, full blown ‘sports’ as such, and with rules tailored to
the age concerned. Such games give a good grounding in basic ball
skills, teamwork and playing according to the rules.
From
Class Seven onwards, there is a more formal games programme, which
gradually introduces the children to a broad range of activities
including: hockey, badminton, tennis, archery, volleyball and
basketball. We organise some of these activities to take place at the
Hereford Leisure Centre.
The school also has two active
basketball teams that participate in local leagues as well as playing
against other Steiner Schools.
